Deep within the heart of the Philippines thrives a pioneering venture known as “pig parenting,” that is revolutionizing hog raising practices. Among the project’s beneficiaries stands Ms. Mary Jane Lacarta Lor, a committed member of the Pandanon Integrated Balangon Farmworkers Association, Inc. She has embraced the opportunity to participate in this innovative initiative that brought significant positive changes in her life and the lives of other women farmworkers.
The project begins with carefully selecting piglets for their health and genetic qualities at one and half year old. Through a comprehensive rearing process, Ms. Mary Jane and her peers monitor their growth, nutrition, and well-being for over three and a half months. Once matured, pigs are sold to recover initial capital and generate profits that supports in subsequent cycles of pig patenting. This cyclical approach ensures a sustainable and continuous flow of capital. Therefore, it presents an ideal opportunity for Mary Jane to supplement her income and achieve greater financial independence.
As Ms. Mary Jane and her team oversee the growth of these animals, they cultivate valuable skills in animal husbandry and agricultural management. By actively engaging in decision-making processes, Mary Jane and her colleagues break through traditional gender stereotypes that have long prevailed in the agricultural sector. Furthermore, the project prioritizes environmental sustainability. Through its conscientious approach to waste management, it not only minimizes environmental impact but also underscores a dedication to sustainable practices. By redefining norms and embracing innovative solutions, Ms. Mary Jane and her team are not only securing a stable income stream but also contributing to a greener, more sustainable future for their community and beyond.
By adhering to this well-structured pig parenting model, the project aims not only to yield profits but also to establish a self-sustaining venture with the potential for ongoing success in the hog-raising industry. As Ms. Mary Jane continues her journey as a participant in the pig patenting project, she exemplifies resilience, determination, and the transformative power of community-driven initiatives. Her story serves as an inspiration to others, demonstrating the profound impact that small-scale agricultural projects can have in empowering individuals and communities to thrive.
