An initiative under Fairtrade Emergency Relief and Resilience Project funded by GIZ

In the beautiful landscapes of Kandy and Kegalle, Sri Lanka, Fairtrade NAPP has launched a significant initiative aimed at boosting food security and empowering local farming communities. Supported by GIZ funding, the project forms part of the Emergency Relief and Resilience Fund, which addresses the growing challenges of food and energy price fluctuations. Through this initiative, 20 net houses have been distributed to 20 Fairtrade SPO member families, providing them with a powerful tool to improve their vegetable cultivation amidst unpredictable environmental conditions.

Building for Success: The Net House Journey

The introduction of these innovative net houses marks a new chapter in sustainable farming. Each structure, measuring approximately 14m², is designed to protect crops from harsh sunlight, harmful insects, and other environmental stressors by providing 50% shading. Despite minor delays during the construction phase, the project moved forward smoothly, thanks to the dedicated efforts of two service providers. One partner completed their assigned houses on time, while the second, with additional support from Fairtrade Germany, overcame minor hurdles to finish construction shortly after the project deadline. The result? 20 net houses now stand ready, supporting farming families, including both women and men, in their efforts to grow nutritious food.

Empowering Farmers and Strengthening Communities

The impact of these net houses goes beyond just providing a secure environment for vegetable cultivation. They offer families the chance to increase their food security and generate additional income by selling surplus produce. By participating in this initiative, these farming families are better equipped to face the challenges posed by climate change and fluctuating markets. Moreover, the project fosters a spirit of collaboration as farmers come together to exchange knowledge and experiences, further strengthening their communities.

A Sustainable Path Forward

This initiative represents more than just short-term relief; it sets the foundation for long-term resilience. With ongoing support and training from Fairtrade NAPP, these farmers are not only improving their current farming practices but also preparing for a sustainable future. They are embracing innovative techniques and adapting to a rapidly changing agricultural landscape. The success of this project is a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and the unyielding determination of farmers who are committed to building a brighter tomorrow for their families and communities.
