A Path to Sustainability: Climate Adaptation and Community Awareness in Barangay Casinagan, Philippines

In the heart of Barangay Casinagan, Philippines, a significant step was taken toward strengthening community resilience in the face of climate change. Fairtrade’s ongoing efforts to promote a sustainable and fair system have extended beyond economic initiatives to embrace environmental sustainability. Recently, a comprehensive Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation workshop was held, targeting community awareness and building the capacity to adapt to the changing climate. This initiative aimed to educate and empower individuals to reduce risks associated with natural disasters, ensuring a more secure and sustainable future for all.

The workshop, attended by 53 participants, began with an essential introduction to Fairtrade and the orientation on SOMA Membership. With a strong focus on local realities, the session provided participants with a deeper understanding of climate, weather, and the long-term impacts of climate change. Through a retrospective look at the recent disasters—including Super Typhoon Rolly, the eruption of Mayon Volcano, and the devastating El Niño drought—community members shared their personal stories. These experiences highlighted the direct effects of these disasters on their lives, from damaged livelihoods to loss of crops and income. In understanding the timeline and scale of these events, participants were better equipped to assess their vulnerabilities and take proactive steps toward reducing these risks.

The workshop also delved into practical solutions, focusing on agro-forestry and the planting of native trees. These strategies are vital in climate change to mitigate environmental damage and foster sustainable practices to help communities recover from future disasters. Participants were encouraged to consider applying this knowledge at the household and community levels through these discussions. The session was more than just an exchange of information; it was an opportunity for community members to reflect on their experiences, learn from each other, and strengthen bonds to help them face challenges together.

The immediate feedback from the workshop was overwhelmingly positive. For many new SOMA members and PIDCI staff, the orientation and introduction to Fairtrade were both informational and deeply insightful. New members were introduced to Fairtrade’s mission. In contrast, long-standing members had the opportunity to deepen their understanding and refine their approach to developing and implementing a Disaster Risk Reduction Management Plan for their organizations. The workshop provided the community and Fairtrade staff with an essential roadmap to ensure long-term sustainability and resilience. This initiative has sparked a renewed commitment within the community to adopt sustainable practices, with many participants expressing eagerness for future sessions.

The real success of this workshop is reflected in the voices of those who attended. Luzviminda Ringad, a 60-year-old Samahanng Organikong Magniniyog ng Albay member, expressed her gratitude for the valuable knowledge shared. She emphasized how the skills gained from the session could be directly applied to her family’s disaster preparedness efforts. “We can apply it in our family. In case we encounter disaster, we know what to do with your help,” she shared. For Luzviminda, this workshop provided the necessary tools to adapt to climate change and a sense of empowerment and security.

Johnlee Nocedal, a 22-year-old PIDCI staff member in charge of the sustainability program, also highlighted the importance of the session. “I have learned about Fairtrade, and it gave me an idea on how to practice it,” Johnlee said. He recognized the urgency of protecting the environment and emphasized the need for ongoing action, such as tree planting, to ensure a more sustainable future.

The workshop in Barangay Casinagan was just the beginning of a more extensive journey. As Fairtrade continues to build its presence and support for local communities, continuous education, and hands-on action remain a priority. Every session and shared experience lay the foundation for a more resilient, sustainable future. Through the collaboration of Fairtrade, local organizations, and community members, the efforts to adapt to climate change are not just about survival—they are about thriving in a rapidly changing world.
