From May to September 2024, the Nong Luang Muang Khai Community Enterprise Group in Thailand embarked on a transformative journey to improve soil fertility and build climate resilience among farmers. Funded by Fairtrade Germany and supported by Fairtrade NAPP, the Soil Fertility Improvement in Fairtrade Plantation Project emphasized the sustainable reuse of organic farm residues, promoting nutrient recycling while empowering farmers to meet Fairtrade environmental standards.
Training Farmers for Sustainable Change
The project began with a composting training session on September 13, 2024, led by Miss Srisail Upananchai, an agricultural extension expert from the Nong Muang Khai District Agriculture Office. Held at the group’s office, this training equipped farmers with the knowledge and techniques to convert organic waste into compost, a vital step toward reducing farm residue burning and improving soil health.
Raw materials for compost production were distributed to all farmer members after the training. Each participant utilized these materials and organic farm residues to produce compost and integrate it into their fields, ensuring immediate application of the knowledge gained during the workshop.
Immediate Impact: Building Climate Resilience
The project has already delivered significant outcomes. Farmers now have enhanced knowledge of composting techniques and the benefits of recycling organic waste. The use of compost has improved soil structure and nutrient content, increasing the productivity and sustainability of Fairtrade-certified plantations. These efforts not only meet Fairtrade standards but also ensure the long-term viability of the supply chain by fostering environmentally friendly farming practices.
A Long-Term Vision for Sustainability
The project’s broader impact lies in changing farming practices. Farmers create a sustainable cycle that improves soil health and increases yields over time by eliminating the burning of organic matter and encouraging its reuse through composting. This shift promises higher incomes and better livelihoods, strengthening the resilience of farming communities against climate challenges.

Voices from the Field
Farmers expressed their appreciation for the initiative. Miss Samaporn Khankaew, 56, shared, “I learned a lot from the composting training and will apply it to my farm. Thank you for initiating such meaningful activities for farmers.” Mr. Krittapat Ariyasutham, 67, added, “The training taught me how to use recycled organic waste through composting. This is such a valuable project, and I’m grateful for it.”
Fairtrade’s Commitment to a Sustainable Environment
This project highlights Fairtrade’s dedication to addressing climate change and improving farmers’ livelihoods. By supporting innovative and sustainable practices like composting, Fairtrade NAPP and Fairtrade Germany create pathways for farmers to thrive while protecting the environment. The Soil Fertility Improvement in Fairtrade Plantation Project is a testament to how small, community-driven initiatives can have far-reaching impacts, fostering a future where farming is both productive and sustainable.
