The Foundation: Understanding the GLS Program
The Gender Leadership School (GLS) was established as part of the Fairtrade Gender Strategy 2016–2020 to address gender disparities within agricultural supply chains. Aiming to empower both women and men with leadership skills, the program promotes inclusivity and equity across communities, organizations, and households. Since its inception, the GLS initiative has been co-funded by the European Commission and has significantly contributed to creating sustainable and inclusive agricultural practices.
In Pakistan, the GLS program includes extensive training modules, mentorship, and practical projects to encourage participants to implement gender-focused initiatives. The program’s scope has grown to cover not only leadership development but also critical areas like financial literacy and advocacy for gender-inclusive policies.

However, resistance to gender-focused initiatives and difficulties in achieving cultural change in conservative settings remain significant threats.
