Challenge of a New Role: Facing Gender Barriers
My name is Rahila Anwar, and I have been working as a supervisor at Vision Technologies (Pvt.) Ltd since 2017, overseeing the production of sports balls. Despite my new role, I felt the need to further develop my leadership skills to navigate the challenges I faced, particularly being a woman in a male-dominated environment. Many of the male employees were resistant to taking instructions from a female supervisor. Additionally, I found it difficult to communicate effectively in high-pressure situations and often doubted my own abilities.
The Opportunity for Growth through Fairtrade NAPP Gender Leadership School
When Fairtrade NAPP’s Gender Leadership School was launched in 2019, I knew it was the opportunity I needed to improve my communication skills and build my confidence. I was particularly motivated by the fact that our organization had a significant number of female employees, and I wanted to ensure that women like me were empowered and accepted as leaders in our workplace.
The Gender Leadership Training was a year-long program divided into three phases. Leadership development was a core focus, and I gained invaluable skills in communication, people management, and confidence-building. The training transformed me both personally and professionally. We replicated the knowledge-sharing sessions in our organization, which not only helped me but also benefited my female colleagues. Through these sessions, we were able to raise awareness about gender equality and leadership among our peers, including male employees, creating a more inclusive and supportive work environment.
Personal Transformation: Empowered Confidence and Leadership
One of the most significant changes I experienced was my enhanced ability to manage workload and work stress. The leadership skills I acquired made it easier for me to navigate workplace dynamics, and I saw a noticeable reduction in work mistakes that were previously happening due to personal gaps. Although I continue to work in the same position, my approach has completely transformed—I now confidently handle all challenges that come my way.
The training significantly boosted my confidence. I started taking on tasks beyond my job description and gained hands-on experience in various areas of my work. I didn’t let criticism hold me back, and I became capable of making key decisions. Today, I feel responsible for being a role model and inspiring other female co-workers to believe in their own leadership potential.
Extending Impact to the Community
Beyond my organization, I recognized the power of education in creating real change. We organized several awareness sessions on healthcare, female nutrition, mother care, and breast cancer for women in our community. These efforts empowered women not just within our organization but also in their personal lives, spreading knowledge to their families and neighbours.
Fairtrade NAPP played a crucial role in my journey. Their training covered not only productivity but also important social issues, environmental awareness, and youth leadership. These lessons left a lasting impact on my personality and professional development. Moving forward, I am ambitious for further career growth and advancement within my organization, and I hope to continue making a difference by supporting and empowering others.
Looking Forward
The journey may have had its challenges, but I’m proud of the progress I’ve made and the impact I’ve had on my community and workplace. I aspire to continue breaking barriers for women, creating a workplace where gender equality thrives, and leading the way for future generations.
