In September, Yogyakarta City became a hub for advancing cooperative financial skills as Fairtrade NAPP hosted a specialized training program for Indonesian Small Producer Organizations (SPOs). Focused on building capacity in financial management, this initiative aimed to empower SPOs with the essential skills for transparent, accountable, and effective resource management. Fairtrade NAPP is equipping SPO leaders with tools to drive long-term sustainability and resilience within their communities through this training.

Enhancing Financial Skills for a Stronger Cooperative Future

The workshop’s primary goal was to instil sound financial planning, budgeting, and accounting practices rooted in sound governance principles. Led by experts Faishol Chusni and Setiawan Pan, participants explored Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), cooperative strategic planning, and the integration of the Fairtrade Development Plan. This intensive session gave participants standardized tools to manage their organizations’ resources effectively and align with Fairtrade’s sustainability goals.

A Collaborative Learning Experience

With representatives from eight committed SPOs across Java Island (Coconut Sugar, Herbs, Herbal Teas & Spices, Coffee), the workshop fostered a spirit of shared learning and collaboration. During the three-day event, attendees engaged in interactive activities and discussions that allowed them to exchange insights, address shared challenges, and collaboratively explore solutions for better resource management. The energy and engagement of the participants underscored a collective commitment to improving financial governance in their cooperatives

Introducing Customized Accounting Solutions

A significant outcome of the training was the introduction of customized accounting software, specifically designed to meet the unique needs of Fairtrade cooperatives. Set to be implemented in 2025, the software aims to streamline accounting tasks and ensure uniformity in financial reporting across all SPOs. Fairtrade NAPP will support this transition through online follow-ups and field visits to ensure each SPO successfully integrates the software into its operations, laying a solid foundation for accountability and transparency.

Sustained Impact through Fairtrade's Support

Beyond financial training, the workshop emphasized developing action plans that align with Fairtrade’s objectives. Participants crafted plans prioritizing resource accountability, strategic annual planning, and embedding Fairtrade values into daily operations. Through ongoing field visits, Fairtrade NAPP will monitor and guide the implementation of these plans, strengthening the cooperative framework and reinforcing community development efforts over the long term.

Voices from the Training

Arinal Chusna (F), Treasurer, Koperasi Karya Manis Sejahtera (33806)
“The training was great. Through the training, we, as board members, are more aware of the areas we need to improve, particularly related to the implementation of financial accounting processes. We have not learned these materials in other trainings. We hope there will be more training sessions for members and board members of Fairtrade cooperatives in the future.”

Solikhah (F), Financial and Administration Staff, Koperasi Manunggal Adil Sejahtera (45211)
“I am glad that I joined the training, as I gained new knowledge, made friends, and enjoyed the experience. The trainers created an engaging and lively atmosphere. Despite the complexity of some materials, I was able to learn and understand them.”

Subanul Arif (M), Secretary of Board, Koperasi Nira Kamukten (42391)
“The training truly helps us in improving our accounting system as well as in composing financial reports. We will utilize the accounting software for our accounting processes.”

A Vision for Sustainable Cooperative Systems

Fairtrade NAPP’s vision for cooperative sustainability is realized as SPOs gain crucial skills in governance, financial transparency, and planning. SPOs can manage their Fairtrade Premiums more effectively with these tools, translating sound financial practices into impactful community development initiatives. This program represents a meaningful step toward building resilient, self-sustaining cooperatives across Indonesia.
