Fairtrade NAPP recently took a significant step towards enhancing sustainable production by conducting a CP (Contract Production)) review workshop. This event brought together Promoting Body (PB) and Producer Executive Body (PEB) members to align and refine CP standards, ensuring they remain practical and uphold Fairtrade’s ethical values.
The workshop began with a joint session where Promoting Body and Producer Executive Body members shared objectives and outlined the CP review process across the NAPP region. Representatives from the Fairtrade International (FI) Standards Unit provided guidance on how the review would be conducted and its implications for producers. Participants were divided into PB and PEB groups to ensure unbiased input, facilitating open discussions on key challenges.
Constructive Dialogue and Immediate Impact
After that, there were discussions and debates during which participants expressed their opinions using instruments like chart papers and questionnaires. Sincere comments were welcomed in this interactive format, which aided in identifying practical problems and possible improvements for the CP standards. Members of the groups shared distinct and well-defined insights during the workshop. The Standards Committee will gather and send this input to the Fairtrade International Consultant for additional review. Producers have been prompted to reply to an online survey to sustain the pace, enabling more people to participate in the assessment process.
Challenges and Future Opportunities
Important obstacles were highlighted throughout the workshop, including worries regarding the shift from CP to self-organized producer organizations (SPOs). Even if there will be long-term benefits from this shift, PEB members don’t think the immediate incentives are as compelling. The administrative and documentation requirements for this change are also major obstacles.
Marching Forward
Despite the difficulties, the CP review session represented a critical advancement in boosting Fairtrade contract Production. Fairtrade NAPP ensures that standards reflect local circumstances and global aspirations by holding open discussions with producers. The way forward is becoming more apparent with sustained follow-up efforts and a dedication to continuous communication about a more equitable and sustainable future.
