SOWING JUSTICE, BREWING CHANGE BEYOND COFFEE WITH KOPI LINTONG

In Indonesia’s highlands, where the delicious aroma of coffee fills the air, an emerging cooperative is about to embark on a transforming adventure. The Kopi Lintong Cooperative, now in its third year, is working toward Fairtrade certification, which offers economic rewards and a deeper feeling of community and cooperative governance. A recent training aimed at strengthening the cooperative’s awareness of Fairtrade standards, values, and certification techniques. The emphasis was on establishing Fairtrade’s key principles, such as the minimal price and the Fairtrade premium and the value of excellent cooperative governance.

The training covered essential topics such as cooperative members’ rights and responsibilities, democratic control, non-discrimination, and cooperative autonomy. These principles are more than theoretical; they are the foundation upon which successful cooperatives are created, ensuring that all members have a voice and a stake in the cooperative’s success.

The training immediately influenced management, supervisors, and cooperative members, who better understood the Fairtrade system and cooperative business model. This core knowledge is critical as they work through the certification process.
In the long run, the objective is that growing awareness will lead to a profound dedication to the Fairtrade system, accompanied by sound governance practices inside the cooperative. This commitment is critical to the cooperative’s long-term growth and ability to meet its members’ expectations and the global market’s needs.

Kopi Lintong has a lot of obstacles to overcome. It lacks an established structure as a new cooperative with no economic activities yet. Nonetheless, the potential for success is highlighted by the members’ excitement and the backing of important parties, including the buyer, LDC, which has dispatched four field officers to accompany the cooperative.
The cooperative offers a unique opportunity to establish a robust, long-lasting cooperative from the ground up because of its enthusiasm to adopt Fairtrade and the direction and support that it gets. Kopi Lintong is taking initial steps toward building a community-focused business as it moves toward Fairtrade certification. While driven by buyer demand, the cooperative is exploring the potential of Fairtrade principles, which may bring positive changes to its community over time.

By embracing Fairtrade principles and cooperative governance, the cooperative is steadily progressing toward meaningful, long-term improvements in its community. Kopi Lintong faces both opportunities and challenges, but with ongoing dedication and support, it can make a positive impact as a Fairtrade initiative in the region.
