In the lush Davao Region of the Philippines, a groundbreaking study aimed at improving the coconut value chain for Fairtrade producers has been making waves. The goal was to explore growth opportunities, tackle market challenges, and empower small-scale farmers. Coconut farming is a crucial livelihood for many in the region, but it comes with obstacles, such as fluctuating market prices and limited access to resources. This study sought to uncover ways to overcome these barriers through focused group discussions (FGD), key informant interviews, and data analysis focusing on enhancing farmers’ income and sustainability.
Unveiling Opportunities in the Coconut Market
Driven by the Fairtrade Network of Asia Pacific Producers (NAPP), this study deepens into the coconut farming sector, unlocking transformative market insights and opportunities. It reveals how small producer organizations (SPOs) can enhance their coconut production by adding value and increasing incomes. The research also explores the benefits of intercropping coconuts with valuable crops like bananas, cacao, and coffee, showcasing exciting new possibilities for innovation and growth in the industry.
Cracking Coconut Industry Secrets
Our team dove into the coconut farming communities to achieve these goals, connecting directly with farmers and industry players. We held in-depth discussions with farmers, chatted with government officials and buyers, and carefully analysed production and market data. What we found was revealing: while several farmers are switching to organic practices, many others continue to rely on conventional methods and struggle with ongoing pricing issues in the coconut market.
The Shift to Organic
The study’s impact is already visible. There is a growing shift among Fairtrade producers toward organic farming, a trend that aligns with global market demand and promises better income opportunities. The study also highlighted the importance of government and NGO support in providing training, infrastructure, and market connections to bolster the coconut industry. This project has laid the groundwork for long-term, sustainable growth in coconut farming in the Davao Region. Focusing on market connections, value addition, and diversification makes the future promising for these coconut producers, who now have the tools and support needed to thrive in an increasingly competitive market.
